Question Engine performance

Dear all,

I find the engine performance of our recently acquired bongo is a little bit disappointing. It is hard to know if the performance is to be expected for this engine, or if it is below average since I have never driven other Bongos before.

So, the engine is a 2.5 diesel, from 1999 and it has 120K (kilometres) on the counter. It is an automatic. When the engine reaches 3000 revs, the engine becomes sluggish. If the slope reaches 7% or more, the bongo slows down to 50 mph. Otherwise, on flatter roads, the engine reaches 70 mph, and can even get 80 mph.

So, I am wondering if other bongo owners experience similar performances...

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards all

Hello
I'm finding the very same thing , this also my first bongo ,could our buses be twins ⯑
Going uphill or on steep inclines seems to be the worst dropping to 50 mph
If I mash the peddle the gear box drops down but the speed does not seem to increase ⯑⯑
My plan is a good service , blanking off the EGR system ,Allan's sell them , and running a good fuel system cleaner through the motor . I'm also going to have a look at the banjo filter ans clean it
It might be worth looking at oilem.co.uk in planning to get the fuel system cleaners , additives ,oil conditioners from them , they seem to be getting good reviews.
At the end maybe these buses are simply slow and cool .......how bad ⯑⯑
Best of luck
Brian

That sounds like a Bongo, dont forget these things are 2.5 tonnes and the engines are over 20 years old in design. 50mph is acceptable up an incline, you could be in a vw T1 T2 which would be lucky to go any faster than 50mph on a straight.

OK, it sounds like that is not a fault then. This is somewhat re-assuring anyway. Thanks for the responses.

50 I dont think thats normal .
Ok full campers are a little slower , but these are powerful engines .
Have you checked turbo waste gate ? and or vacuum hoses ?
I think a specialist could put that extra power back into it .
Mine scares me in the high 90s , its still got power .
