Hi Ruck,
We bought private,we went and saw three in different locations, from the Cotswolds down to Porthcawl all in the same day.Lot of miles but was well worth it as I had done my homework and knew the right questions to ask and what to look for.Our "Boris" has never let us down and has gone through 5 years of MOT's with no advisaries. Some may say lucky, I like to think that I made my own luck, plus I do the majority of the easier tinkering myself unless it is out of my engineering knowledge. All the best mate, and remember if you don't know ask as someone on this forum will definitely put you right.
Regards David

Realise my comment a bit late but just wanted to add that this guy is a NIGHTMARE to deal with. We did end up buying our Bongo from them as found out too late that he was awful..... we live far away. The van itself is sound but I would not recommend dealing with this guy. Very stressful and unpleasant experience.

I draughted a reply to this thread a while back saying what a terrible experience I had with the guy but deleted it since it might have been a one off. I see it's not just me though. I was very unimpressed with his attitude and I refused to pay a deposit for a vehicle I couldn't even look at first and it sounds like that was the right decision. It was cheaper to buy a van elsewhere and fix it up with new parts than buy one of their 'approved' vehicles anyway.

Just to put a bit of balance to this topic.....
Phil at JAL can seem a bit odd, I first met him about 10 years ago when he started fitting our coolant alarms to every Bongo that passes through his business. We did have the odd 'moment' but if you can get past his somewhat strange ways you will not regret it.....he is by far the biggest dealer by number of bongos sold....in all the years I have been involved with Bongos I have never heard of a owner ending up with a lemon.......he sources high grade bongos in Japan, imports them, converts them and sells them. He will stick to his warranty and again no reports of him renaging. He knows his bongos and at the end of the day you will have a good vehicle. If you ask the same question on the 'other' forum you will get a much more balanced view.
I no longer have any dealings with Phil and no interest in his business!!
